When we set out to revolutionize heating and air conditioning for the Land Rover Defender, we knew we had to go beyond just making a bigger heater or a more powerful fan. We needed to understand the science of thermodynamics and how to maximize efficiency in a vehicle known for its poor HVAC performance.
At the heart of our research was Delta-T (ΔT) - the difference in temperature between the air entering the heater box and the air exiting through the dashboard vents. For example, if the outside air is 54°F and your heater raises it to 70°F, the Delta-T is +16°F. In theory, installing a larger heater matrix should increase this number, but that alone isn’t enough to fix the Defender’s biggest flaw: its heater cannot recirculate cabin air.
Defenders pull air into the heater box from an external vent, meaning the system is constantly trying to heat outside air - a process known as an open circuit. The result? Your interior temperature is entirely dependent on the weather. If it’s 23°F outside, and your heater provides a +16°F increase, your cabin will only reach 39°F - not exactly cozy!
Modern HVAC systems work on a closed circuit, meaning air is recirculated, reheated, and continuously improved. This compounds the heat gain, creating a far more comfortable interior, even in extreme temperatures.
But this principle is even more critical for air conditioning. While a heater benefits from a closed system, AC requires one to function properly. That’s why in New York City, it’s now illegal to run AC with doors or windows open!
A common mistake in HVAC upgrades is simply doubling the fan power. While this may sound effective, pushing air through the heater matrix twice as fast means it has half the time to warm up, reducing efficiency. Instead of raw power, precise fan speed control is the key to balanced airflow and optimal temperature regulation.
Our advanced HVAC system is designed using all these principles to deliver maximum heating and cooling with minimal energy consumption. By closing the circuit, optimizing Delta-T, and fine-tuning airflow, we’ve created a game-changing solution that transforms the Defender’s climate control into something truly modern and efficient.
