General Air Conditioning Advice and Tips

Understanding AC - Simple Tips for a Smooth Setup

You don't need to be an A/C expert to get the most out of your air conditioning system - but there are a few things to watch out for, especially when it comes to charging your kit. Here are some common issues:

1. Noisy Compressor

If your compressor is loud or rattling, it's likely overcharged or charged with liquid. This creates too much pressure. To fix it, have the system evacuated and recharged to the correct levels. Check out our Charging Guide:

2. Heater Control Valve Installed Wrong

If your A/C cools at idle but blows warm air when you rev the engine, the heater valve might be installed backward. This valve has a flow direction - make sure it matches the arrow on the valve. A faulty or incorrectly installed valve can let hot water in, reducing cooling.

3. External Evaporator Freezing

If ice forms on the outside of the coil, airflow can get blocked and your A/C may seem like it's not working. This usually happens in humid conditions or if your thermostat is set too low. Check door and window seals and adjust the thermostat.

4. Internal Evaporator Freezing

If cold air turns warm after long drives, moisture inside the system might be freezing up the evaporator. This causes pressure to drop and the A/C to stop cooling. A professional can evacuate the system and replace the drier if needed.

5. Poor Airflow to the Condenser

The condenser needs fresh air to work well. If it's not getting enough airflow, pressure can build up. You can test this by placing a fan in front of the condenser and spraying cool water - if pressure drops, better airflow is needed.

6. Expansion Valve Issues

If dirt or debris gets into the system during setup, it can block the expansion valve. Signs include odd pressure readings:

Blocked valve = high pressure on one side, very low (or vacuum) on the other.
Stuck open valve = both pressures reading too high.

7. System Blockages

If something is blocking the system - especially between the compressor and the drier - you'll see high pressure readings. A local A/C shop can quickly test and confirm the issue.

Not Sure What's Going On?

If something doesn't seem right, don't guess. A local shop or technician can help diagnose and fix most issues easily. And of course, we're always here to help too.
